Anne Hathaway has been asked to retrieve her pet dog from the New York apartment she shared with jailed ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri. Hathaway ditched the Italian businessman earlier this month, after discovering his unscrupulous business dealings, and fled their Trump Tower apartment, leaving behind two year old chocolate Labrador Esmerelda. According the New York Post, the pooch is being cared for at the pad by Follieri’s mother, who is in New York undergoing cancer treatment – and unable to look after her properly. A source tells the newspaper, “He (Follieri) can’t afford a dog-walker and his mother has cancer. I feel bad for the dog. She’s a beautiful, sweet dog.” Follieri, 29, has been charged with a dozen counts of federal wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering. He is behind bars until he can post $21 million (GBP10.5 million) bail.

Hathaway says, “I was waiting to do this one shot and this (Russian) girl comes up to me… she’s got a bottle in one hand and she pushes me and says something, no clue what. “She thought I either stole her boyfriend or she just did not like the look of me. So all of a sudden these two security guards from our movie come out of nowhere, pick her up by the arms, and she was gone. And I was advised not to ask any questions.”

Anne Hathaway’s businessman ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri has hit out at reports their split was caused by his controversial business dealings. Hathaway reportedly dumped her longterm lover at the weekend, fearing his headline-grabbing antics could sabotage her burgeoning career. The Get Smart star had previously stood by her man throughout their four-year relationship, during which Follieri has been caught up in a host of scandals – most recently last week, when it was revealed the children’s charity he runs was under investigation by New York authorities. Follieri was also arrested earlier this year for passing a bad cheque and was sued by a former business partner in 2007. But his spokesperson insists the Italian businessman is “angered” by “repeated mischaracterisations” of his breakup with Hathaway – because the split was amicable. The rep tells the New York Post, “It is worth noting, as you continue to attempt to scandalise a respected businessman and philanthropist, that the Follieri Foundation has vaccinated hundreds of children in Nicaragua and Honduras to date, in addition to recently rebuilding an orphanage in Brazil.”

According to Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper, the Devil Wears Prada star ended her four-year romance with the Italian after months of controversy surrounding Follieri’s business dealings. Follieri has been caught up in various scandals over the last 12 months – most recently last week, when it was revealed the children’s charity he runs was under investigation by New York authorities. He was also arrested earlier this year for passing a bad cheque and was sued by a former business partner in 2007. Hathaway stood by her man throughout his legal troubles, but now appears to have had enough – fearing the impact it would have on her growing Hollywood career. A source tells the publication, “It’s heartbreaking for her to dump him, and she’s devastated that it’s come to this, but she really didn’t have a choice. His scandals were hurting her reputation.”

The roles have gotten bigger, the paychecks fatter, but not much else has changed about Anne Hathaway since she started making noise seven years ago with the release of her first big feature film “The Princess Diaries.” She was a teenager then, but she was just as luminous, unpretentious, curious, witty and gracious as she is today. And Hathaway’s maturity has always been one of her most endearing assets. She’s now a legitimate contender for roles that were once automatically offered to some of her more famous contemporaries — some of whom have to rely more on their looks than their talent. That’s one of the reasons why “Get Smart” director Peter Segal knew she was the one when Hathaway agreed to audition for one of the most coveted roles in town at the time. “She was literally the first actress we had read for the part and everyone wanted to play this role,” he said. “She is a big fan of ‘The Office’ and wanted to work with Steve (Carell). Anne Hathaway got a taste of the Hollywood high life on the set of new film Bride Wars when she befriended co-star and paparazzi target Kate Hudson. The Princess Diaries star has often claimed she’s too boring to be hounded by the media, and now she’s glad she isn’t on the paparazzi A-list after watching Hudson deal with all the photographers. She says, “I don’t usually have to deal with a lot of paparazzi attention but Kate does. We were filming on the street in New York the other day and there were, I kid you not, 50 paparazzi on the street. “We had to call off the shot because they wouldn’t get out of the way and we had to find a different location. “It’s crazy what Kate Hudson has to deal with.”

Anne Hathaway is dreaming of marrying her businessman boyfriend Raffaello Follieri – but “not yet”. The actress has stuck by the Italian through two messy legal problems – he was sued by a former business partner last year and arrested for passing a bad cheque at the beginning of 2008 – and she insists the couple will marry when the time is right. Hathaway says, “It is on the cards. Absolutely. Just not yet. I’ve always wanted a family.
