65th Venice Film Festival announces lineup
Posted on July 30th, 2008 @ 3:34 am

Big Hollywood studios will take a back seat at this year’s Venice Film Festival, with the competition lineup highlighting independent U.S. cinema, Italian productions and Japanese animation movies. Last year, U.S. and British movies dominated the lineup, with nearly half of the films in the main competition. This year, only five English-language movies will vie for the top prize at the world’s oldest film festival. It opens August 27. Among them is Jonathan Demme’s “Rachel Getting Married,” starring Anne Hathaway and Debra Winger in the story of an ex-model returning home for her sister’s wedding after spending 10 years in and out of rehabilitation centers. The other U.S. films in the main contest are “The Burning Plain,” a family drama with Kim Basinger and Charlize Theron, and “The Wrestler,” with Mickey Rourke in the lead role.

Hathaway refuses to sing the blues at karaoke
Posted on July 27th, 2008 @ 8:20 am

Newly single Anne Hathaway put her love woes behind her on July 21 as she took part in a karaoke session with friends and family at a New Jersey restaurant. The Get Smart star – who split from Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri last month – paid a visit to the Martini Beach eatery in Cape May, where she sang and danced around with pals before taking to the mic to sing Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing. She later returned to the stage to give a rendition of Scottish singer K.T. Tunstall’s girl power hit Suddenly I See – a track which also featured in Hathaway’s movie The Devil Wears Prada. Karaoke host Terry O’Brien tells People.com, “She was the life and soul of the party.” But the 25-year-old star also had a warning for O’Brien, joking, “Don’t put this on YouTube!”

FBI seizes Hathaway’s private memoirs
Posted on July 24th, 2008 @ 9:00 am

Even though Anne Hathaway has cut off all communication with Raffaello Follieri, the FBI has confiscated the actress’ intimate journals, looking for dirt on her ex-fiance’s financial wheelings and dealings. Follieri has been charged with 11 counts of fraud and money laundering. The New York Daily News is reporting that FBI agents also snagged photos of Follieri with Hathaway, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Pope John Paul II, and John and Cindy McCain, as well as documents, watches, a Tiffany clock and an antique Bible. Since his June 24 arrest stemming from allegations that he convinced investors he could use his Vatican connections to buy Catholic Church properties at below-market prices, Follieri has remained in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York. Good thing Anne Hathaway finally got smart and dumped this dude. But let’s hope those private journals don’t fall into the wrong hands, like at some headline-hungry tabloid.

Hathaway urged to leave Follieri by Andrews?
Posted on July 12th, 2008 @ 5:59 am

Actress Anne Hathaway reportedly sought advice from Dame Julie Andrews before she finally split from boyfriend Raffaello Follieri. The Get Smart star separated from the Italian businessman last month, shortly before he was arrested on suspicion of fraud. And Hathaway – who shot to stardom as Andrews’ grandaughter in the 2001 film The Princess Diaries – allegedly ran to the legendary actress to seek advice before finally ending the romance. She decided to take action because she was so distraught over the potential effects Follieri’s actions could have on her career. A source tells U.S. publication the Globe, “Julie was a mentor to Anne early in her career and the younger actress respected her opinion and her distance from the personalities involved… In the end Julie told Anne she ‘had to do what’s best for her’”.
