22/03 Hathaway may play Judy Garland

Actress Anne Hathaway is in talks to play her movie idol Judy Garland in an upcoming film based on Gerald Clarke’s biography, Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland. The 26-year-old actress is said to be so keen to appear in the movie that she may have to sacrifice other projects, which include a lead role in a comedy called The Fiance, the Daily Mail reported in it’s online edition. The movie charts Judy’s rise to fame and her struggle with drink and drugs. “Anne dearly wants to do a musical and this could be her chance. The big attraction is that it really will be her singing, not recordings of Judy. She is determined to do it justice,” a source said. “If she nails the part, she will be a shoo-in for some big awards,” source added. The Weinstein Company has optioned the film and stage rights to the Garland story. Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland published in 2000, details how the actress and singer was plagued by personal problems and mistreated by employers, family and lovers. In 1999, the American Film Institute placed her among the ten greatest female stars in the history of American cinema. Garland died in 1969 at the age of 47 due to accidental drug overdose.

03/11 DVD reviews: Clever extra helps viewer ‘Get Smart’

Steve Carell slips on Maxwell Smart’s spy-spoofish paraphernalia in “Get Smart,” a silly comedy based on a decades-old TV series starring Don Adams and Barbara Feldon. Turns out the movie’s not as awful as you may have imagined — especially with the “Comedy Optimization Mode” engaged at the start: A phone-booth icon pops up onscreen, click it and you see an alternate version, or versions, of the same scene, usually with ad-libs funnier than what made it into the theatrical version (which is also on the disc). Tip: Skip the Terence Stamp alternates; not funny. Carell’s timing is on target as the analyst-turned-agent, and he and Anne Hathaway as his reluctant veteran partner Agent 99 meld well. Most of the physical gags work but the verbal jokes are more hit than miss, and the plot is skimpy: CONTROL, a good agency (entered via a phone booth), tries to foil a fiendish plot by KAOS, a crime syndicate. And any similarities to the James Bond movies are not coincidental. Also on Blu-ray. Extras: Alternate scenes with different versions of jokes on single disc. Gag reel, making-of short, bit with Carell riffing in different languages, digital copy, more on two-disc DVD set and Blu-ray.

16/06 Hathaway gets ‘Smart’ in at least 99 ways

The roles have gotten bigger, the paychecks fatter, but not much else has changed about Anne Hathaway since she started making noise seven years ago with the release of her first big feature film “The Princess Diaries.” She was a teenager then, but she was just as luminous, unpretentious, curious, witty and gracious as she is today. And Hathaway’s maturity has always been one of her most endearing assets. She’s now a legitimate contender for roles that were once automatically offered to some of her more famous contemporaries — some of whom have to rely more on their looks than their talent. That’s one of the reasons why “Get Smart” director Peter Segal knew she was the one when Hathaway agreed to audition for one of the most coveted roles in town at the time. “She was literally the first actress we had read for the part and everyone wanted to play this role,” he said. “She is a big fan of ‘The Office’ and wanted to work with Steve (Carell). She came in and read with Steve and he went off the page and she followed. A lot of those ad libs ended up in the movie.” Read the rest of this entry »

15/05 Anne Hathaway Goes Wild … for a Movie

Spotted: Anne Hathaway swinging from a rail, dancing and taking shots at over-the-top Chinese eatery Kowloon outside of Boston. But this wasn’t the case of a starlet-gone-wild. Hathaway was working, filming scenes for her comedy Bride Wars, which costars Kate Hudson. According to Stanley Wong, whose family owns Kowloon, “The scene was very funny. Basically [Hathaway's character]‘s on spring break. She’s getting drunk and basically making a home video.” The restaurant, a favorite of local sports stars and visiting celebs, is outfitted with palm tree murals and running fountains – and was likely a stand-in for a spring break-like venue. Lauren Birmingham, the restaurant’s rep, tells PEOPLE the scene will be used in the film to sabotage Hathaway’s character who is getting married the same day as her friend (played by Hudson). But when the cameras stopped rolling, Hathaway was sweet as can be, Wong says. She even posed for a picture with him. Before filming, “she was really quiet,” he says. “And then she really got into the scene!”

07/05 Hoodwinked 2 Voice Cast Revealed

Cory Edwards, director of Hoodwinked! and co-writer of Hoodwinked 2: Hood vs. Evil, announced on his Blog that “Heroes” star Hayden Panettiere has joined the voice cast of the animated sequel, replacing Anne Hathaway as the voice of “Red.” Edwards, who again will voice Twitchy, revealed most of the voice cast in his post: Many of the original cast have returned. Glenn Close is still Granny, and Patrick Warburton remains The Wolf (very, very happy about that). Nicky Flippers will once again be performed by David Ogden Stiers. Andy Dick has voiced Boingo again (that’s right, Boingo is still around, as unstable as ever… but not the greatest threat this time). And yes, the goat is back. Japeth the singing goat will appear again, voiced by my good buddy Benjy Gaither. There are some brand new and very cool additions to this sequel. This time around, Red will not be voiced by Anne Hathaway, but by Hayden Panettiere, the “super cheerleader” from Heroes. This seems very fitting, since Red becomes a bit more of a “caped crusader” in this film. Read the rest of this entry »
